Usually customers shopping for a twin size mattress fall into two categories. Either you are a parent shopping for a child’s bed or you’re an adult sleeping singly on a twin mattress. In this article, I try to speak to both of you with the pros and cons you’ll face.
If you’re a parent and you’re considering memory foam, its because you want your child to sleep well at night on a quality mattress. There have been many studies showing the effects of a good nights sleep on a child’s behavior and performance during the day. I’ve seen many parents request a simple mattress sometimes as hard as a board because their kid can sleep on “anything.” This maybe true but you want your kids receiving a deep sleep which can come from a better quality mattress.
I helped a lot of college students and adults of all ages get a twin size memory foam mattress. This page however focuses more on children on memory foam. Click to learn more about the benefits of memory foam for more of an adult’s perspective.
Memory foam has many wonderful benefits but let’s talk about the drawbacks first. Children can be too young for a memory foam mattress. Infants and some toddlers could potentially suffocate because they sink into the mattress. If they sleep face down the mattress with contour to their face and leave little room to breath. The contouring also makes it a little bit more difficult to quickly move on the foam. Someone described it as being like quicksand.
If you buy a low quality memory foam that’s been manufactured cheaply, you could expose your child to off gasses. With the popularity of memory foam there are a lot of choices, many of which are organic or all natural. Take the time to read how it was processed and what certifications the manufacturer has.
Some people say also that memory foam may not be good for a growing child, but I don’t buy that one. Mostly they’re referring to babies or infants on memory foam crib mattresses. See the articles on crib mattresses.
You can get past the drawbacks by buying a quality twin memory foam mattress for your age appropriate child. Memory foam is great because it contours to your body better than any foam. Providing a memory foam mattress for your child can help them have great spine alignment, have excellent blood flow, and have a well performing foam that gives a consistent feel for many years. I’m very much in favor of a twin memory foam mattress for children and teens.
If the cons of a memory foam mattress scary you too much, consider a quality twin latex mattress. Latex is another quality foam that can provide a good nights sleep for your child.
