That all depends on how you interpret “cheap.” Many people don’t want to spend $500 for a twin size mattress that’s for a child or is a temporary bed. They don’t expect the mattress to be as good as the one they sleep on so their think cheap. But hold on! Going too cheap may lead to a failed mattress with no warranty where you’re having to purchase again and wasting money. Here are some tips on how to pick the best cheap twin size mattress.
1. Pay Over $100–You Get What You Pay For
Most mattress stores carry a bargain bed to catch your attention. These are the ones you usually see advertised as an amazing deal. When you actually get to the store and see this cheap twin next to all the other beds, you realize why its advertised for so low. Its cheap! Too cheap. An important threshold is $100 for a twin. Don’t go under that. A good middle ground twin mattress should be around $200.
2. Get a Warranty
A cheap twin mattress that’s going to last a while will come with a warranty. It may not be a warranty for an awfully long time, but even a 5 year warranty can make a difference. If you’ve bought a piece of junk, you’ll notice within the first couple of years. That’s why a warranty can give you some piece of mind. Look for a 5-10 non-prorated warranty.
3. Buy on Sale
Most customer that are shopping for a cheap twin size mattress have some time to plan for it. You have a child that’s graduating to a regular mattress, you’re setting up a new room that requires a twin mattress, or you’ll have a guest in your home for an extended period. Whatever the reason, you can take a few weeks or months to find a good deal. Search through your local mattress ads to find a quality twin at a discounted price, or wait for a big retail sale day like President’s Day. Shopping online may be effective too, but check shipping charges.
4. Liquidation Store
Many area’s will have a mattress liquidation center. Usually these mattresses are scratch-n-dent (scuffed up in the store), returned under the warranty/guarantee, or overstocked mattresses. You can find some great deals if you don’t mind some minor blemishes. However, cheap twin mattresses are often hard to find. When their in stock they go fast.
Searching through your local classifieds may help you find a decent cheap twin mattress. In our local market there’s a great online resource where a lot of mattresses are posted. Many are used and others are enterprising individuals selling a truckload of mattresses out of their garage. For many reasons I suggest going to a retail store like getting a guarantee or warranty, having a local retail you can trust, and knowing that there’s no history of damages or spills on the mattress. Having said that, I know many people that are satisfied with their second hand mattress. It doesn’t hurt to look.
